The report Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Diagnostic Kenya 2023 provides an initial ecosystem analysis of contextualised challenges, gaps and opportunities within the Kenyan entrepreneurial ecosystem.
A diversified but fragmented ecosystem
The report provides a foundational understanding of the Kenyan ecosystem’s unique context, including the existing strengths and weaknesses of the private sector, common business models among early-stage enterprises, and key entrepreneurial ecosystem dynamics that either hinder or support early-stage entrepreneurial activity, in particular youth- and female-led enterprises.
Kenya is home to one of the most advanced entrepreneurial ecosystems on the African continent. Whilst supportive frameworks have been laid through business support, network structures and policy frameworks, particularly in the capital region, in very early and early-stage entrepreneurs struggle to get their businesses off the ground due to complex administrative procedures, a shortage of relevant industry skills and difficulties in accessing suitable financing options.
Why should I read this diagnostic?
This report analyzes strengths and weaknesses, and identifies obstacles and opportunities for targeted intervention.
It provides an analytical framework of the ecosystem based on nine pillars that can hinder or foster the growth of pre-seed and seed-stage companies, and proposes recommendations and strategic actions to strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem along 4 intervention axes:
1. Capacity building and networking.
2. Business environment.
3. Entrepreneurial culture.
4. Mapping and knowledge of the ecosystem.
A shared resource for more targeted and coordinated action :
As there are a number of international development programmes working on entrepreneurship in Kenya, a high amount of coordination is needed in order not to duplicate efforts. This diagnostic can provide insights on gaps and potential focus areas to any actor willing to support the Kenyan ecosystem, or playing a significant role in creating an environment conducive to innovation, creation and growth of youth and women's businesses, whether they are business development providers, policymakers, investors, development partners, academics, media, etc.
