Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) form the backbone of Kenya’s economy, driving innovation, job creation, and community-level resilience. Yet, despite their potential, many young, green, and women-led businesses continue to face significant challenges in accessing the financing they need to grow and scale.
Recognizing this gap, IYBA-SEED and WE4A projects convened a dynamic Access to Finance (A2F) Knowledge Exchange Café on 13 November 2025 in Nairobi.
The session brought together an engaged group of Technical Advisors, ecosystem partners, and sector specialists from the WE4D team, GIZ, the IYBA-SEED Project Management Unit, and Intellecap. The purpose was clear: deepen collective understanding, share insights, and strengthen collaboration on unlocking meaningful financing pathways for MSMEs across Kenya, with a special focus on green and women-led enterprises.
A meeting of mind: understanding MSMEs at the local level
One of the core highlights of the event was the presentation of two complementary studies conducted by Intellecap. These studies provided fresh, highly contextual insights into the realities of MSMEs operating in Kiambu, Mombasa, and Kajiado, three counties that reflect Kenya’s diverse economic landscape.
- The first study mapped MSMEs engaged in green sectors and those run by women entrepreneurs. It revealed the strengths of these enterprises - including high levels of innovation and strong community root - while also identifying key challenges such as limited collateral, fragmented support systems, and uneven access to formal financial products.
- The second study assessed the appropriateness of existing financial services for young businesses in Kenya. Despite a proliferation of financing products, many still fall short of addressing the needs of early-stage MSMEs, particularly those transitioning into the green economy.
These insights set the stage for a vibrant exchange on how development actors can better align financing instruments with the real and evolving needs of MSMEs.
Deepening understanding, aligning strategies
Throughout the session, participants engaged in interactive discussions, and group reflections. The café created an open, collaborative environment for knowledge sharing.
Key insights:
1. A clearer, evidence-based understanding of MSMEs
Participants gained a stronger appreciation of the diversity, resilience, and structural challenges facing MSMEs in the three counties.
2. Recognition of persistent gaps in the financial services landscape
Despite increased innovation in fintech and credit offerings, many products do not adequately match the realities faced by young and green businesses.
3. Need for coordinated action among development actors
Participants emphasized the importance of aligning interventions across WE4D, IYBA-SEED, WE4A, and partner organizations.
4. Momentum toward innovative financing approaches
From results-based financing to blended finance and credit readiness programs, the discussions illuminated several pathways.
A forward-looking commitment
As the session concluded, partners reaffirmed their commitment to translating the ideas generated into joint actions. Agreed next steps include deepening collaboration across programs, continuing evidence generation, and exploring innovative financial models tailored specifically to green and women-led MSMEs.
The momentum created at this café sets a strong foundation for future sessions, and for a more equitable financing landscape for MSMEs across the country.
