A new report by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Sagana, explores how European foundations invest in small and growing businesses in emerging markets and developing economies.

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and Sagana, with support from the European Commission, have released a new report exploring how European foundations are investing in small and growing businesses (SGBs) in emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs) and sharing their perspectives on the role of catalytic capital.
The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs is a member of Team Europe IYBA and this study has been conducted to contribute to the TEI IYBA priorities. It aims to gain insight into the European landscape of foundations and uncover possible aligned interests with public development actors on this topic.
Some innovative approaches to get inspired
With over EUR 54 billion collectively spent on charitable purposes, Europe has a rich and diverse foundation landscape; however, few invest in EMDEs, and even fewer in SGBs in EMDEs.
This report offers unique insights into how a select group of pioneering European foundations is embracing innovative approaches to drive systemic change for underserved communities, support local entrepreneurs, and mobilize third-party capital.
Further opportunities for cooperation along the way
Additionally, the report includes a dedicated section for public actors, offering a high-level assessment of how these foundations currently interact - or may be willing to interact - with public institutions to support SGB investment in EMDEs.
This is a must-read for public actors, foundations, and impact ecosystem actors seeking to align their capital with long-term impact more effectively.
