The report Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Diagnostic South Africa 2023 provides an initial ecosystem analysis of contextualised challenges, gaps and opportunities within the South African entrepreneurial ecosystem.
A diversified but fragmented ecosystem
The report provides a foundational understanding of the South African ecosystem’s unique context, including the existing strengths and weaknesses of the private sector, common business models among early-stage enterprises, and key entrepreneurial ecosystem dynamics that either hinder or support early-stage entrepreneurial activity, in particular youth- and female-led enterprises.
Grasping diversified environments and businesses
The entrepreneurial ecosystem of South Africa is characterised by strong networks and a diversified Business Support landscape, creating an increasingly enabling environment for (very) early-stage entrepreneurs to start and scale their businesses.
However, it is important to note that these networks and business support structures are rather fragmented and often not efficiently coordinated. As a consequence, very early and early-stage entrepreneurs with different geographic and demographic backgrounds do not have access to the same quality of support. Finance and Entrepreneurial Culture represent the most evident barriers in the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
This report analyses strengths and weaknesses, and identifies obstacles and opportunities for targeted intervention. It provides an analytical framework for the ecosystem based on nine pillars that can hinder or foster the growth of pre-seed and seed-stage companies, and proposes recommendations and strategic actions to strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem along 4 intervention axes:
- Capacity building and networking.
- Business environment.
- Entrepreneurial culture.
- Mapping and knowledge of the ecosystem.
A shared resource for more targeted support
Although a one-size-fits-all solution seems to be challenging in diversified environments such as South Africa, it also opens avenues for innovation and more targeted support.
This diagnostic provides insights to any actor willing to support the South African ecosystem, or playing a significant role in creating an environment conducive to innovation, the creation and growth of youth and women's businesses, whether they are business development providers, policymakers, investors, development partners, academics, media, etc.
